Playing in the World of Beads, Wire and More

I started making earrings when I was about 15 yrs old. Being a shy teenager, I was always immersed in some form of artistic creativity.

There was a bead store in Saratoga, CA, that my friends and I frequented: Tasso’s. It is no longer there, but it was a source of amazing inspiration and we would hitchhike up there from Sunnyvale and Cupertino and buy a handful of beads, just to make a few items that we could keep or share with each other.

Lately, I have been creating with beads again and these are a few of my designs and ideas. I really try to get my inspiration from colors around me in the mountains here and strive to do something that is different from all the others, however it is a huge world full of like minds and sometimes, those minds meld and create the same type of items.

I do find comfort in the simple fact, if I create a set or anything, that the idea did come from my mind and not the concept of someone else. I was bending wire and making little scroll designs, long before the massive publications came out displaying them prominently. I painted beads, embroidered with beads and just created what I felt made me or someone else smile.

I have several, Facebook, sites, that display my work.  https://www.facebook.com/CaliWildVioletDesigns?ref=hl

I will be adding to this blog with additional creations. I read a very good blog this morning about those who copy other individuals work, so I know that some of these might be copied. I do not say this with the attitude, that I am so incredible. I am not incredible, I am however talented at what I do and it is because I have educated myself in ways that add to producing my concept in artistic mediums.  When it is blatantly obvious that your methods and designs are playing a part in other individuals creations, one stops to think about the values of a pleasant courtesy question: Do you mind if? or a pleasant acknowledgement: I was inspired by what you did…Unfortunately, I live in the real world, where those little courtesies are left in the ditch on the side of the road.

I always tell someone if they inspired me. I also ask if they mind, if something I do is incorporated into a design.  I am not perfect. I am not a saint or angel, but I have a history with my artistic abilities, connections, explorations, delight in another individual’s ideas and simple respect and courtesy.

Mini Art Quilts and other Related Artistic Endeavors

For anyone following my blogs and there really are only a few, these may be repetitive. It takes me awhile to get on here, even with a faster connection.

All of the work, that I have recently completed, with the exception of the Owl, is for sale on http://www.artfulvision.com under my name, Jennifer Haworth. I like to combine materials to make an attempt at a statement. ironically, the pieces I do not like are the ones that everyone else does.

So these are my latest pieces of work. Almost all are from 8″ to 11″ tall and about the same or less wide. They are finished on the back with a sleeve for the dowel that I make and also a hanging string, yarn or otherwise.

Thanks for stopping by and you can also find me on FB, Pinterest and a variety of other places, I probably lost track of…..but will post later.

The top one is not finished and entitled: Pathways Cross the Sky. Second: Owl by the Silver Moon. Third: Where Fairies Dance til Dawn.

I have more to add later, tried and it is being way too slow.

Just a Mask, Ink Over Pencil

I am not a painter, however I do try sometimes. I love prisma and veri-thins, colored pencil, ink and all types of paper. There are times, from the past, when there was no generator here and if you lost power, our road was one of the last on the list. Trees fall, lines get tangled and candles are a must. Two years ago, we had a 6 day power outage and while we do have propane, we did not have a propane stove at that time, we had heat though and candles, so I could draw. I can illustrate and I can paint simple doll faces, however every image of what a watercolor might turn out to be has been lost on me and my attempts, so they stay simple.

Row Row Row, Studying Use of Colored Pencil

None of these are Adobe. They are just my mind. None of these are special, however they served a purpose and filled an empty space at the time, they were created. Some drawings come from a collection, that I titled: Postcards from Hell Series. Those were initially born out of living with a chronic alcoholic musician and continue, when I need to journal draw.

Art Work Using Adobe Photo Shop

My Oddyssey Flower aka Cannabis Bud

I use to marvel at some of the art work, that one can pull up online. I was amazed at technique, design, and accuracy. This was all until I discovered, I had that ability on my own computer.

These are my playful approaches to some of my own photographs.

Mushrooms

Out of ideas, to work with? Take a walk. I am fortunate for this time period in my life, to live on one of the most beautiful areas in the world. Since I have had the advantage to live in all types of terrain, this can create a world of ideas. No Supplies? I work with what I have and often it is in the front yard. Shapes, designs, colors, images, come from the world around you. If you take the time to look…really look, you will be amazed what you will see. Squint to get another approach. Use your mind.

Everything one does in life is a reflection of what is inside that person. If you live surrounded by people who look away, those people are fools and you need to look past them. I do this all the time. Very few comment or even know what I am capable of doing, because in their rush rush, day to day…they are blind.

Fir Grove Designs Cloth Dolls and Cloth Doll Patterns

The most important time in my life, was when my son, Jacob aka Jake, was born. I developed a business, so I could stay at home with him and attempt to bring in additional income. These are my cloth dolls.  Some of them appeared in publications, were solicited pattern designs, sold three-dimensional, stood in galleries and shows and more. I was published in the past over 60 some times, between cloth dolls,  patterns, paper dolls, articles and graphics. It was a very good time, in my life, when I felt important.

Most of the original dolls were large and I scaled them down to a more attractive size. The Woodsman, was my logo doll. The original was stolen from my storage in Oregon. He stands about 18 inches tall. Humpty also stolen, however I think I have one of him and he sits about 6″ to 8″. All of the sitting type dolls, sit about 6″ to 8″.

The dolls I create are not  perfect, however having struggled initially through patterns that I found horrible and hard to understand, I tried in every possible way to give extra in my pattern booklets. My column in a magazine called: The Cloth Doll Magazine, was ‘Helping Hands’.

I also have a newsletter that I produced with some simple, useful  tips for anyone who is just beginning.

Most all of my cloth dolls can stand on their own. The gypsy dolls, Mimo’s companion, jesters and some others are either not in pattern form or I have them in pattern form, not put into a booklet.

I currently offer quite a few of these in full, complete, detailed form. I offer full size patterns and full color photographs with all my patterns. I was a writer for a now, out of print magazine, called: The Cloth Doll Magazine and I was the paper doll artist for another out of print publication titled: Western Doll and Teddy Bear Collector. The paper dolls will be shown under their own category.

Recently I put some ads up and one person in my area actually purchased a pattern and emailed me, advising me that she had looked through it and it looks like fun. Thanks Hannah!

I actually have a doll that I made called: Hannah and her little sister Lily, that is similar to my classic rag doll design.

Patterns range in price from sheet patterns at $2.00 to $7.00 for the more detailed booklets. My dolls use to sell from $200.00 to $400.00.

Meara and Maggie Cloth doll pattern

Meara and Maggie are in a cloth doll pattern booklet form. The two sisters each hold one charge. Meara holds a toddler and her sister, not show above holds a goose. The bodies have a slight wire inserted to position arms securely around their charge. All of the clothing is removeable…Sounds Hard? Nope, it is a very easy pattern to follow and detailed to answer all questions.

Fiona Cloth Doll Pattern with Stump Pattern

Fiona and a sister Fairy come in a pattern booklet form. The stump pattern is included. She is a round bottom, woodland character. Fun and Easy to follow pattern.

Mimo and His Chicken Cloth Doll Pattern

Mimo and his Chicken is a cloth doll pattern in booklet form. I created his gal pal for fun and I am not sure if I have a pattern for her. She  is there to keep him company and was just fun to create.

My Version of Babar

Babar was created upon request and although I have his pattern, I will not offer it, until I find out if it is safe from copyright violations, due to his famous character. I love ELEPHANTS!

Classic Rag Doll

I have this pattern, however not in a booklet yet. This design of mine, was used for different characters and appeared in several national aka worldwide publications. I think it was Cassie that appeared in Doll Making, however I will have to look through my files to figure that one out. She is fun to make…different hair types, faces, clothing and more.

Christmas Jester, soon to be in a pattern booklet

Jester

I am not fond of clown type things, however I was a jester in the ‘Starlight Parade’, in Portland, Oregon once. The Christmas version did win a felt doll prize at some show I did in either Corvallis or Eugene, late 80’s.  I am working on the booklet for this one..It is much easier to make than it looks.
